Full Summary: Picking up where his award-winning In The Mood For Love left off, Wong Kar Wai's 2046 is a visually seductive reverie of memory and regret, refracted through a serial womanizer's experiences with six women. Chow Mo Wan played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai with the charm of a young Clark Gable moves from being a gambler to a pulp-fiction writer, and 2046 follows him through various liai-sons with several beautiful women. Playfully merging past, present, and future, 2046 is at once the number of the hotel room in which the couple of In The Mood For Love conducted their extramarital encounters, and the date of Hong Kong's final integration into China.

Recurring musical motifs (bel canto opera, Latin dances from 20th-century nightclubs, stark instrumental solos) characterize not only the characters in the story, but a sense of loss in the many strands of nocturnal worlds from Hong Kong to Singapore, and of lovers' promises and betrayals. They further amplify a vast emptiness the vanishing aura of a pre-1949 Shanghai. Time is marked by Christmas, in the whirls of Nat King Cole's reassuringly mellow voice.

While Tony Leung appears as a writer living from hand to mouth producing seedy novellas (no longer In The Mood For Love's aspiring writer and almost faithful husband), the women of 2046 belong to his narrative past, present and future. Gong Li, the mysterious gambler who only gives her name in their parting is clearly the most complex, and her appearances are marked by the atmospheric, remorseful musical segments of Ume-bayashi's "Polonaise" and newly composed music by Peer Raben, adapted from music based on an earlier theme used in the film Third Generation (1979). Carina Lau, who inspired the film's title 2046 (Leung took her room number as a sign for his novella at the beginning of the film), reintroduced another soulful theme from Raben's music to Fasbinder's Querelle (1982), which then accompanied the sad farewells of Leung's subsequent women. These remixes are departures: they mark the beginnings and endings of musical and emotional journeys.
